On these cold, crisp nights, there is nothing I like to do more than sit down in the evening and give my hands and nails a little bit of TLC. At this time of year, in particular, my skin and cuticles are run ragged from the blustery weather, chilly expeditions outside and the relentless hand washing that comes from having a teething, weaning, coldy ten month old.
For the past few months I have been a slave to my gel manicure but recently I decided to give my nails a break and spend some time conditioning them and giving them some care and attention. When it comes to makeup and nail shades, I adore an Autumnal colour palette – those deep burgundies, rich reds, purples, plums and beautiful berry tones literally leave me wanting to change my nail colour every day – one thing I miss with having a gel polish on for up to three weeks!
So I thought I would share with you my current Autumnal nail routine – the process and the products I have been reaching for which have helped care and colour my nails this season, without the need to step into a salon. I have been using a few new products from Sally Hansen which have saved my cuticles from the elements and given me the luxe feel of a gel manicure, at home! Check out the Sally Hansen range here. When it comes to nail care, Sally Hansen are the nail expert and have a product for every nail ailment it seems. I think everyone, in times of nail desperation, have reached for something from Sally Hansen. I certainly remember purchasing and re-purchasing Sally Hansen’s Hard As Nails when I was a teenager!
- I like to start my giving my nails a gentle buff to remove any ridges and then simply file them into a rounded tip and quite short so they won’t catch or break too easily.
- On bare nails I brush on the Sally Hansen Cuticle Rehab which is an intense oil that softens, smoothes and restores dry, ragged cuticles (the bane of my life!) It contains Vitamin E as well as Jasmine and Rose Extracts which all help to calm, soothe and reduce nail breakages. Once the oil is applied I simply massage it into my cuticles and wait a bit before applying my base coat. To get the best, most long-lasting manicure I find it is essential to apply a base and top coat to really prepare the nails well and sandwich in that colour.
- Once the base coat is applied it is time to choose my colour. With the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Colours they are literally the next best thing to a salon gel manicure, and it means I can chop and change my nail colour as often as I like and save a little bit of money in the process as they are only £9.99 each. No light is needed, you just simply apply the colour, finish off with the Miracle Gel top coat and you are good to go. They boast over 40 shades so there is a colour for every occasion and season – I personally am loving ‘Off With Her Red”, “Can’t Beet Royalty” and “Bordeaux Glow” for the Autumn.
- Finally I sit back, light a candle, finish off my rather indulgent hot chocolate and admire my new nail colour. This gorgeous shade is Bordeaux Glow and I love it!
